The title of the exhibition Trees says it all (Nous les Arbres): trees are a subject not an object, living beings capable of communicating, adapting, and worthy of love. Adopting an eclectic approach, the Cartier Foundation brings together contemporary artists (Luiz Zerbini, Thijs Biersteker, Fabrice Hyber, Giuseppe Penone…), extraordinary scientists (Stefano Mancuso, Francis Hallé …) and ‘first people’ like the Yanomami Indians. These different viewpoints change our own vision of this animal and vegetable world today exploited and ransacked, as illustrated by EXIT (Diller Scofidio + Renfro). At a time when deforestation is running riot, this exhibition reminds us that the tree is the wisest and most beautiful of our ancestors, and the one most vital for our future.
